John “The Nice-Guy” Edwards

It is with a mix of amusement and disgust that I watch the South Carolina Democratic debate. Clinton and Obama steal the stage once again with their outbursts, providing a plethora of media attention (and fodder for hecklers). In the corner however, stands a resolute John “Nice-Guy” Edwards. The third party, the largely ignored yet highly lovable addition to the drama unfolding on the stage.

The incessant war between the front-runners develops and continues unabashed to be broken by Edward’s outcry of:

“Are there three people in this debate, not two?”

I could have hugged him then. He could have phrased it differently. He could have used the Giuliani-style “There are three people in the debate, not two”. Yet with humility oozing out of his every pore. Edwards merely suggested (Hang it all John, a president needs to be assertive).

The BBC remarked that:

“Trailing the two front-runners by a wide margin, Mr Edwards attempted to rise above the acrimony while pleading for an equal hearing.”

With emphasis on the “pleading”. It is my firm belief that Edwards will need to shed the skin of a “nice-guy” and roughen up his image if he wants to be taken seriously. The people want a fighter. Democrats want someone with the tenacity and grit to enforce change. It is quite clear to me that being a “Nice-guy” in today’s political theatre is to be destined for the bottom of the barrel.
