The Internet and Sharia Law

Afghanistan.

I find it ironic, that in a country where the western world touted “Democracy for all”, has shown once again what the reality on the ground is like. We remember the pictures of men of all ages flocking to the barber shop to cut their hair in the new “Freedom” trend. Yet despite news laws and rhetoric. The core of our disdain for fundamentalism remains. Sharia Law.

Sadly, what was once the golden icon of a new stage for western foreign policy, shows its true visage. One that never really changed

Sayed Perwiz Kambakhsh, 23, is to be put to death. For posting and retrieving blasphemous matieral from the internet. This blasphemous material involved information regarding the globally contested role of women in Islamic society. Despite the obvious uproar by Human rights advocates and groups, rather than back-down, A primary court in Balkh province threatened any contesting of the sentence. Democracy indeed.

A widely respected global watch-dog, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) remark:

“Kambakhsh did not do anything to justify his being detained or being given this sentence

One can only hope that the man who heralded a new Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai, can step up and intervene on behalf of this man.
