Obama Wins South Carolina
With 99 per cent of the votes counted Obama leads Hillary Clinton by 54% to 27%. The victory was largely expected in a state where half the electorate are African Americans. Despite the overwhelming (82%) African American contribution, Obama downplayed the key to his victory as being one of race. By claiming:
“It is not about black versus white. This election is about the past versus the future,”
The triumph comes in a state where the electorate placed the economy as being the most pressing issue at hand. The war in Iraq, chosen by a mere fifth of voters. With this in mind, I’d like to briefly summarize Obama’s stance on the economy.
- Advocates a harder-line with China over their currency manipulation
- Return to PayGo
- Critical of George Bush’s current policies (he claimed it would take 1 or two years to “dig out”)
- Protection of the middle-class
- Renewed National Investment
- Small Business Protection
- Universal Health Care
- Helping the low income workforce
