Winograd Report Concludes Israeli War On Hamas A Mistake
Olmert, facing heavy criticism after the 34 day war on Hamas in 2006, planted the mine that would eventually blow the wheels from his chair. The Winograd commission confirmed that which many already advocated, that the war was a serious and costly mistake.
In the conflict that followed, more than 1,000 Lebanese died, mostly civilians, along with 160 Israelis, mostly soldiers. source
The invasion seems to have strengthened Hamas, Israel’s failure to carry out their mission, seen as a victory. Despite the report, Ehud Olmert seems determined to resist calls for resignation. On the basis that he will fix, that which he screwed up. If you ask me, it’s a bit like asking the repair guy who fried your motherboard to fix the DVD instead.
Olmert is not out of the woods yet however. The labor party looks fragile, and the actions of Ehud Barak, a member of Olmert’s coalition, could force a new election. Given the mood and interest surrounding the issue. I wouldn’t place any bets on Olmert. Then again, recent history would teach us otherwise. With Bush re-elected on similar terms. I guess it takes time for sense to sink in.
