Human Rights Watch Annual Report Slams “Fake” Democracies

In this year’s Human Rights Watch world report we are illustrated the ominous trend of autocracies passing themselves off as democracies.

Today, democracy has become the sine qua non of legitimacy. Few governments want to be seen as undemocratic.

The pretense of having false elections or “democratic” polls, enough apparently, to vie for the status as a democracy. The report slams the west for being easily appeased by these self-styled wannabees. It might seem strange to some, the idea that we are seen as too lenient. With the advent of the Iraq War many have protested the aggressiveness of western foreign policy. But the truth is that while we declaim and declare war on terrorism, we also sponsor them. I recently outlined an example as Saudi Arabia. Among the accused (according to Human Rights Watch) are the following countries.

Outright fraud: Chad, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Uzbekistan
Control of electoral machinery: Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Malaysia, Thailand, Zimbabwe
Interfering with opposition candidates: Belarus, Cuba, Egypt, Iran, Israel, Libya, Turkmenistan, Uganda
Political violence: Cambodia, Congo, Ethiopia, Lebanon
Stifling the media and civil society: Russia, Tunisia
Undermining the law: China, Pakistan
