The Fate Of Kosovo And Serbian Elections
Sunday’s Serbian electiona hold a deep political meaning both in the region and in the spectrum of global influence. With two political paths open to them, Serbians must decide what path they wish to pursue, the Russian one or the European one.
At the center of the contention lies Kosovo. Kosovarian declarations of independence have caused frustration and resentment in many Serbians, their fears leading them to place their trust in Tomislav Nikolic, who advocates closer ties with Russia over Europe. Nikolic, a former ally of Slobodan Milosevic, also strongly opposes Kosovo independance.
“It is a country in agony and decline. This is a country of unfulfilled promises and great expectations, like in Charles Dickens.” Tomislav Nikolic.
Both Europe and the U.S support Kosovar independence, setting the stage for yet another political showdown and power struggle with Russia in the region.
