Progress In Afghanistan?

Hamid Karzai was joined today by Condi and David Miliband to discuss the “tensions” in the country. The tensions however were fairly evident in the meeting. Despite the diplomatic talk the facts speak for themselves. Karzai reacts, and demands more soldiers to compensate for lack of progress in the region.

Despite the negotiation, and NATO’s rhetorical “we’re in it for the long haul”, Condi grudgingly agrees that the situation on the ground (as opposed to paper) is “difficult”. Coming from a White House Administration that would label an end of the world scenario as “inconvenient” — well — you get the idea.

Hamid Karzai said he was grateful to all the Nato members for their contributions to Afghanistan’s progress, development and stability, but still called for more soldiers on the ground. source

Iraq’s little foreign policy sister Afghanistan, who’s people have witnessed the resurgence of fundamentalist values in the form of an empowered Taliban, are a direct threat to the west’s justification on their (our) foreign policy. Although I am less inclined to roll my eyes heavenward here as I do believe there are some issues worth addressing.

Yet again, we see the goals of a war extended and sustained indefinitely, with no apparent goals beyond those of keeping the body-count down and the pipelines intact. If it were up to me (which you might be glad it isn’t) a military presence can only be considered a short term goal for quelling the dark-tide.

In short, pooling more troops will amount to nothing.
