Iraq: Alliances Break, Violence Worsens
U.S Defense Secretary visits Iraq amidst a recent swelling in violence and political trepidation. Sunni militias known as the Awakening Council have withdrawn support after a dispute with police forces. While some say the gesture is largely symbolic and that the Awakening Council will continue to patrol due to the fact that it is in their self-interest, there is no doubt that this is a significant blow to stabilizing violence.
Although you can’t help but wonder how telling this is. Militia’s controlling militias.
On Sunday, a suicide attack exacted yet another horrific toll on Iraqi Police and Awakening Council members at a checkpoint in Yathrib, killing 34 people and wounding 37 others including civilians. Two villages on the Syrian border were separately attacked across the country killing 22 more people. 4 Civilians were also killed as a tanker was detonated in Mosul. Marking a poignant upsurge in Violence.
The upsurge in violence coincides with Gate’s visit, where he heralds “difficult” decisions that are needed in order to stabilize the country on behalf of Political Leaders.
