Kosovo Declares Independence
The last link in the trilogy of pre-independance posts. I fear this will be far from the last. Confident in Europe and U.S support, Kosovo’s parliament hastily declares unanimous independence. All eyes now turn to Russia, whose actions will heavily determine the future of the state, and the region.
More to come as reactions and positions are revealed.

Or possibly another dangerous standoff on Taiwan. The precedent is scary. I believe in freedom. The ability to self-govern, and a host of over related concepts. But sometimes you need to ask yourself whether the associated cost is worth the title. As that is all it is. A word.
It is also worth remembering that while 2 million Albanians have been “freed from the yoke”, many Serbs have suddenly been displaced as well. A tragedy within a tragedy.
Thanks for adding your great insight once again Tom.

Kosovo, with the encouragement of the international community, has now catalyzed events that will continue for years to come. How can we deny true nations, such as the Kurds, of a homeland when the sovereign territory of a state is seized to create a second national homeland for a nation? If two million ethnic Albanians deserve it, 30 million Kurds do also. Rather than Kurds, one could easily insert Ossetians, or Abkhazians, or Chechans, or Ingushetians, or Navahoes, and so on. I think the greatest danger begins in the Balkans. How can we deny the Bosnian Serbs independence? Yes, Serbia does exist, but, Albania also existed.
The 15th of February will be a national holiday for Kosovo Albanians, but it will turn into a day of national mourning for practicianers of international relations.
